Myths of Mars and Venus

So men and women are not different after all!

Apparently because differences are much more exciting than similarities, we have been taken in by the myth that men and women are from different planets.

The myth is being challenged as explained by Ed Caesar. It is based on a book by Deborah Cameron.

Asian women on the rise

Glass ceilings are not known for shattering quietly, yet for one group of women climbing the career ladder in Britain the breakthrough has come with barely a sound.
With little fanfare, and often minimal recognition in the public consciousness, Asian women professionals and entrepreneurs in the UK are rising to new heights - and beating a path for a generation of ambitious young women behind them.
Lucy Ward meets a new generation of working Asian women beginning to make their presence felt

Kate Hilpern reminds us that it’s not all hunky dory for, at least, some Asian women who go on being seen in a stereotypical way.

White liberals retreat when the going gets tough on race

Shiv Malik sums up the situation about the white liberal establishment giving into conservative elements within the black and Asian (mainly latter) communities. He cites examples of Behzti, Brick Lane and the BBC who had pulled a drama based on the lives of the 7/7 bombers for fear that it could offend Muslims. He points out the cause of this as the white guilt

Maternity discrimination, new rules and Tofeji

Katharina Tofeji had alleged sex and maternity discrimination and harassment upon return from having a child. She lost her claim. Now the EOC as its parting shot is supporting her appeal. To them she would be a test case on behalf of 000s of such women.

The article also reminds us of the new maternity rules:
• Women returning to work after 6 months off have a right to the same job
• Those returning after 12 months, right to same job or similar position
• 10 keeping in touch days

Stuart Hall

Whenever the word ‘hybridity’ or the phrase ‘local forms of racism’ is mentioned, I am reminded of this giant of a man from the field of sociology and in particular Contemporary Cultural Studies . It was he who founded the CCS department at Birmingham University. Sadly by the time I had got there for my Masters in Social Sciences he had moved to the Open University where he stayed for some 18 years.

His contribution was and is so central to our society that I thought it was inappropriate to categorise him as ‘Black Britain’s leading theorist of black Britain’. He is no more a black sociologist than Phillip Roth is a Jewish writer.

The equality journey

I happen to come across a review, by Francis Beckett of a book by Roy Hattersley over the weekend. It mentioned people’s attitudes to race and in particular to mixed race relationships. It was in relation to Paul Robeson’s Othello. Apparently one critic was so disgusted with a black actor in the role that he walked out; saying that Desdemona’s decision to “choose a darkie” showed that she had a “fragile intellect”. The actress playing the part had to answer moronic questions from journalists about whether she minded being kissed by a black man.

Flexible working

Sunday Times Business Doctor offers sound advice on the rules of flexible working- restrictions, how much notice the employee should give etc.

A similar approach is taken by Personnel Today who address this issue as a part of its ‘Weekly Dilemma’ where caring, not of a relative but of a housemate is involved.

The journal also provides a comprehensive guide to Employment Law on this subject
